About Us
Who We Are
“Developing Youth” is a multifaceted, grassroots program serving young people aged 11-21 in the city of Philadelphia. Our founder, Shanita Leath, is a lifetime Philadelphia resident and Psychotherapist with three children of her own Na’jaee 20, Shynia 19, and Na’eem 15. It started when her children were younger and their family system was faced with community violence. As a single parent raising three children in the urban community, it was not easy.
The family became a victim to many traumatic events but remained resilient. Shanita Leath taught her children how to break the cycle by creating a foundation upon building healthy relationships, healthy communication and utilizing healthy coping strategies. Na’jaee demonstrated entrepreneurship in the 5th grade as her mother encouraged her to utilize leadership skills through her creativity. She is currently the business owner of “Problem Girl Cosmetics.” Shynia implemented her leadership skills as she became a Police Explorer to help bridge the gap between the police and communities. Shynia uses her voice to advocate for her peers and demonstrate the example of youth making changes. Na’eem is currently exploring entrepreneurship as he is developing his brand “Suroor Care.” Developing Youth became a passion as Shanita Leath continues to empower youth by helping them reshape their behavior, mindset and manage their mental health understanding healthy minds create healthy paths.
While there are many programs like it, “Developing Youth” takes a unique approach to both individual and community intervention. We begin by addressing urban trauma and creating social change through building healthy relationships, safe spaces, and goal building. Through these means, we seek to inspire youth to embrace emotional health and inspired career development.
Why We’re Different
Developing Youth believes we can’t “break the cycle” without a firm foundation. “Developing Youth” recognizes that sustained economic elevation and community growth is not feasible unless youth have the space to feel safe and be heard. Built by practitioners and counselors with strong backgrounds in trauma-informed care, we have intentionally crafted our program’s structure around psychological safety, compassionate guidance and peer support. Each step in our program is guided and grounded by SAMHSA’s principles of trauma informed care.
How We Work
We take a three-step approach to community growth, beginning with the youth and expanding into the community. Each step is a reciprocal process in which youth and community partners actively help us redesign and reshape our course to better meet their needs.
